Perfect Racing Day for 2nd Weekend of Tipsy

The number of competitors increased for the second Sunday of the Tipsy Icicle Series at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club.  The forecast of moderate winds down the flash must have got the 80 boats out of bed in the morning, with nearly 100 sailors on the water from over 20 clubs around the North West.  This was going to make it a tough day for OOD Owen Griffiths and Dave Rowlands to keep control of the start lines, but some...

Junior Winter Regatta

The ever-popular Junior Winter Regatta at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club drew in 40 entries from right across the North of England & Wales for a fabulous day of junior racing on January 11th 2020.  A few had been put off by forecasts of up to 37 knots, but the local team were confident that conditions would be sailable with the wind from a more sheltered Southerly direction.  In the event, the wind rarely got above 15 knots and went...

A fine start to the Tipsy Icicle Series

70 entries for the first Sunday of the Tipsy Icicle Series at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club made for some great competition across all the fleets.  There was disappointment initially as a fickle 2-3 knot SSE wind greeted the fleet as they launched.  However, with only a couple of minutes left to the Laser warning signal the forecast breeze filtered in from the forecast SW with 8-10 knots.  After relocating the start line for the new breeze the fleet got...

Leigh & Lowton New Years’ Day Pursuit 2020

A very light and fickle forecast didn’t stop over 40 competitors fending off hangovers to take part in the 2020 New Years’ Day Race at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club.  The forecast was for slowly fading winds during the afternoon, so it always looked likely that the slower boats would benefit.  However, in reality, the wind only really faded in the last 15 minutes, so the event proved to be a very competitive affair with the first 8 boats being...

Blockbuster end to the Revett Series!

This year 51 boats took part in the Leigh & Lowton Revett Series – 5 Sundays from early November to early December.  This was despite a very challenging series with no weather with the “normal” range of wind conditions throughout the series.  Racing on two weekends was abandoned due to zero wind, two weekends were held in very light conditions before the final day arrived to deliver up to 35 knot gusts to blow the cobwebs away after the Xmas...

Drifting Conditions for Guy Fawkes Pursuit

The bonfire smoke had clearly affected the weather conditions as competitors arrived to find the Flash completely engulfed in fog and no wind.  As the OOD Howard Green carried out the briefing to less than optimistic competitors, the mist began to clear and we could see the far side of the lake by the end of the briefing. The Optimists of Alex and Ben Welfare were first off on what turned out to be a running start with the early...

Southport 24hr 2019 – what a weekend!

Winds of 2-18 knots and a mixture of sunshine Saturday and showers Sunday ensured that there was something for everyone at this year’s 24hr race.  A Tequila Sunrise on Saturday morning followed a great Friday night in and around our excellent marquee sourced by event-master Ian Ritchie.  The teams prepped their boats and everything was ready for our starting teams to take to the water for the 12.00pm start. This year, for the first time, we had 4 teams entered...
