The forecast is looking great for the final showdown weekend of the Tipsy Icicle Series. With many of the places throughout the fleets still to be decided there’s sure to be a big turnout this weekend. 80 boats made it to the start line last week and enjoyed excellent racing in 10-18 knots from the North West, with the Asymmetrics being let off the leash on windward-leeward courses! This weekend promises more of the same with 10-14 knots forecast from the East – the lake’s best direction. Get down...
Optimists have been out in force on three Sundays at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Clubs Winter Series. The North Optimist Championship has been held alongside the Tipsy Icicle and has quickly earned a reputation as the toughest winter oppy racing in the North. It had been a long time in coming but it was worth the wait as for the first time in the series a true westerly breeze straight down the Flash allowed the PRO to utilise the full length of the water, and in the process bring a big smile to the asymmetric fleet, as he set a long beat with plenty of off wind legs AND a windward/leeward course for the asymmetrics. After an initial pre-start downpour the sun decided to...
With midweek forecasts of gale force winds for Sunday it was touch and go whether we would get any sailing in this weekend, however the majority of the gale seemed to have blown through overnight as competitors for races 17 & 18 in the Crewsaver sponsored Tipsy Icicle series at Leigh & Lowton sailing club arrived to find a manageable 17 knot south westerly breeze which enticed 46 boats on to the water while many others opted for the warmth of the...

With several weather forecasts for Sunday predicting 30 knot winds, snow and freezing cold temperatures it was little wonder quite a few competitors decided to make alternate plans for Sunday. The die-hards who did decide to turn up found that two thirds of the forecast was right as 30 minutes before the start they witnessed (and sailed in) a blizzard and the air temperature dropped significantly. Undeterred by all of this 49 boats braved the elements and took to the water for races 15 &...
‘Crewsaver’ Tipsy Icicle 2015 – Races 13 & 14 (photos courtesy of Gerard Vanden Hoek) Once again the AP was up for the start of week 7 but the temperate was up and the sun was out for the ‘Crewsaver’ Tipsy Icicle series at Leigh & Lowton Sailing. After a quick lunch the biggest entry of the series took to the water (82 boats), boasting 14 new competitors for two races back to back. It was going to be a...
Crewsaver’ Tipsy Icicle 2015 – Races 11 & 12 Week 6, races 11 & 12, of the ‘Crewsaver’ sponsored Tipsy Icicle series at Leigh & Lowton sailing club and once again competitors arrived on a windless freezing cold morning to find the Flash covered in mist. The PRO, Mike Baldwin, promised all that the forecast was for the mist to lift and a north westerly breeze to fill in around midday. In what seems to be a familiar pattern the...
Results here. Photographs thanks to Gerard Vanden Hoek. Link to Peter Baldwin’s photographs. With a weeklong forecast of a clear sky, frost and a strong bitterly cold wind for Sunday competitors who arrived for races 8 & 9 in the ‘Crewsaver’ Tipsy Icicle series at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club were not disappointed as they were greeted by a clear blue sky and a chilly 18 knot north westerly breeze blowing down the Flash and, for the first time in weeks PRO Peter Baldwins ‘AP’...
