Southport 24hr Race 2018 – great weekend away!

The Southport 24hr race is one of the most testing, competitive, fun and friendly events in the dinghy racing calendar.  This year was no exception with 77 entries, making it the biggest for some years.  Leigh & Lowton entered a total of 3 teams this year with a GP team, Enterprise team and a GP Masters team – this was the first time (ever?) that we have entered 3 teams, having upped the ante again from last year’s 2 teams....

Junior Update 2nd August

Lindsay and Will have compiled the following updates and links for our juniors and parents to mull over in the coming few weeks, it is very informative and well worth a good read – many thanks to both of you: Training on Friday nights has now finished, but as mentioned last Friday, there is still lots happening over the rest of the year. As well as the usual sailing at LLSC on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, there are a series...

Southport 12-Hour Race – our Juniors did us proud!!

The 12-hour race has been a significant event in the NW junior calendar for a good few years now. This year was no different and for the first time we had enough juniors to enter 2 teams and everyone could get out on the water. The team was set up early Saturday morning for Julia’s 7.20am briefing, ready for the off at 8.00am in a light force 2 breeze. Harvey & Lewis got the Enterprise team underway and we soon...

Regatta weekend 2018 – sunshine and showers!

Participants at the 2018 Regatta Weekend were treated to sunshine, breeze, zorbing, BBQ and a full family weekend, plus a torrential downpour! Saturday With an extra emphasis this year on making this a family-orientated weekend, our juniors were split into red, blue and yellow teams to have 2-in-a-boat racing, duck-and-ball games and a topper paddling racing in the only torrential downpour of the day, despite the forecasters predicting worse.  The teams were evenly matched and the edible prizes were spread...

RYA “Try Sailing” day a big success on Pennington Flash

The club hosted a very successful Try Sailing day on Saturday 12th May at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club.  A total of 150 people new to the sport of sailing took to the water for a test sail on a balmy day on the flash.  Many joined up for family and junior memberships, taking up the offers to join courses run by the club’s members to teach them RYA Level 1 and Level 2 sailing and with the opportunity to...

RS400 Winter Championships 2018 sponsored by Rooster & Rope4Boats

A good turnout of 25 boats made the trip to Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club for the 2018 RS400 Winter Championships. Forecasts of light N to NW winds were understated as the fleet had some good tactical winds with enough pressure to get those early-season hiking muscles warmed up, particularly on the second day. Both days started with a mill pond but filled in to give some great close racing. The OOD Gareth Williams did a tremendous job to give...

“Heat wave” hits the last weekend of the Icicle Series

A positively tropical day after the extreme cold of the last few weeks was just the tonic for the last week of the Tipsy Icicle Series at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club on Sunday 11th March. Competitors enjoyed a 5-7 knot light wind race in the first followed by 10 knots gusting 14 in the finale. The wind oscillated between East and South East for most of the day giving the sailors some of the best sailing of the series,...

Storm Emma fails to disrupt Week 9 of Tipsy Icicle Series!!

After a week of gales, snow and ice a perfect day transpired on Sunday 4th March for the next installment of Leigh & Lowton’s Tipsy Icicle Series. Jetties and slips had been de-iced ready for launching the ribs and committee boat, while weather damage to certain parts of the jetties did not impede access to the water. All that effort was rewarded with a classic day’s racing, an East to ESE oscillating wind in the 8-9 knot range, with gusts...

Sunshine & Breeze for Week 8 of the Tipsy Icicle

Blue skies and a great forecast brought 60 competitors out for the 8th week of the Tipsy Icicle Series at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club on Sunday 25th February. The wind didn’t disappoint with 10-14 knots, gusting 18, ENE to SE in the first race and a little less and steadier in the second. The first race clocked all the way round to ENE on the start to make the first beat port-sided but then swung all the way to...
