LLSC Club Prizegiving – Harry Budd & Roger Taylor remembered

The LLSC prizegiving was no ordinary affair this year with 2 new trophies on display commemorating two of the founders of the combined Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club.  Harry Budd and Roger Taylor were the main driving forces behind the merger of the separate clubs of Leigh Sailing Club and Lowton Sailing Club.  It seems unbelievable now that these 2 clubs shared the same stretch of water with their clubhouses only a couple of hundred yards apart (with Manchester University playing...

The weekend started with great excitement and a briefing on teamwork and fitness from Head coach Dave Hivey. The sailors, including 4 youth sailors from Leigh and Lowton, were then put through the paces with a 5 mile run around the reservoir to warm up. After a hearty lunch, extra layers were put on and the...

Revett Series 2015 – Week 2 – Fruity!!

2015 Revett Open series at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club – Week 2 – Races 3 & 4 Another weekend and another ‘fresh to frightening’ forecast that kept the numbers down as this week only 26 boats dared to venture out for a blast (and a swim) around Pennington Flash. After the usual pre-sail chatter about the expected wind strength, and while watching the dark wind gusts from the south west fly out across the water at increasingly more regular...

‘Barts Bash’ on the 20th September 2015

The sun was out but the wind was nowhere to be seen as sailors and spectators turned up for the annual ‘Barts Bash’ race. PRO Alex Morrison signalled a postponement and advised an early dinner and an hour later the flags began to flutter into life as a light southerly breeze filled in, was allowed to steady and then 42 boats went afloat to contest the event. It was one of those frustrating days when you just had to be...

Solo Northern Travellers series at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club

The Solo Northern Travellers series resumed after the summer break with 35 helms arriving at Leigh & Lowton sailing club to be greeted by bright sunshine, an unseasonably high air temperature and absolutely no breeze whatsoever. When what little wind there was occasionally filled in it was not across the whole course and came with big wind shifts of up to 90 degrees and throughout the day, when it was there, averaged 4 to 5 knots over the day....

Topper and Optimist Zone Indicators – Double Home Wins for LLSC, Sam Cooper clinches NW Topper Series

Over 50 Northern Topper and Optimist competitors were welcomed by Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club for the Topper Traveller (doubling up as Zone indicator) and Optimist Zone training. Unfortunately the wind was not as cooperative as indicated in the forecast and racing was eventually postponed until after 2pm, allowing competitors to indulge in some training from Luke Shaw, the famous LLSC home cooking, canoeing and swimming before lunch in the sunshine!  2 races were held in wind between 1-6 knots and a large...
