LLSC hosts final North & Midlands RS Feva Zone Squad weekend
On 9/10th April the RYA North & Midland RS Feva XL Zone Squad returned to Leigh & Lowton for its final winter training weekend. This was the third time that Leigh & Lowton has hosted the squad this winter having kindly stepped in at short notice when Windermere School sailing centre was unfortunately flooded out last December.
After a hard winter of strong wind sailing often in bitter wind chill, this weekend the winds were obligingly varied providing time to practice a variety of skills, in mainly dry conditions with both sunshine and a hail shower on the Saturday. The lighter wind on the Saturday provided an unusual opportunity to have a go at “tied-rudder” sailing with spinnakers round a square course; which was both challenging and “awesome fun”. The winds picked up in the afternoon and by Sunday the wind strength provided the sailors with great planing opportunities.
The weekend’s racing brought the Squad racing series to a close conclusion, with Leigh & Lowton sailors Siân & Eloise winning both helm and crew’s series, beating Pierce & Alfie to a close second in the helm series, and another Leigh & Lowton pair of Simon & Emily taking second place in the crew’s series only on count back.
Many thanks to Dave Woodhead and Dave Eccles for an excellent winter’s coaching. The squad was small but competitive and they are all looking forward to putting their improved skills to good effect in the competition season.
