South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club (SCYC) – 2013 end of year report
A tough economic climate and some pretty terrible weather – surely the ingredients for a year of troubles for a Yacht Club? You’d have thought so – but SCYC is managing to buck the trends. Established fleets have continued to do well and new ones are growing such as the Dragons and the Dinghies. They’ve got a record number of members, a Squib fleet to die for and 3 new Sigma 33s arrived in the late autumn bringing the fleet up to 8 boats. More and more associations are finding SCYC featuring in their national championship calendars and SCYC rarely has to explain what the Club is about!
It was a particularly good year for certain members of the Club. Alan Johnson & Dave Garlic finally won the Squib National Championships in 2012 after many years of being number two. Richard Fildes and his team on board Impetuous (a Corby 37) competed and won the Corby Cup, the Irish Cruiser Racing Association (ICRA) week, Cork week and Abersoch Keelboat Week.
SCYC’s event calendar was a busy one in the year. The season was dominated by Abersoch Dinghy Week, the Laser National Championships, Abersoch Keelboat Week and Abersoch Mirror Week. Over 200 dinghies entered Dinghy Week, nearly 300 sailors came to the Laser Nationals, a record turnout of 400 sailors took part in Keelboat Week and just over 150 kids competed in Mirror Week.
On the social side of things the Bar and Restaurant (The Cove) enjoyed a thoroughly enjoyable and busy season. The Cove was opened up to the general public for the first time ever in its history in 2012 and many new visitors and locals enjoyed the panoramic view of the Bay over a delightful meal.
There were a few disappointments during the year – a couple of events were blown off and one was lost to sun and no wind. Class 2 (the mixed keelboat fleet) race take up was less than last year but considering how bad the weather had been, it could easily have been worse!
With 2012 rapidly coming to a close all eyes at SCYC are on the plans for the 2013 season. The season is topped at Easter for the Squib sailors, is tailed with the August Bank Holiday Regatta and the Cadet National Championships. A full list of events for 2013 is here:
