Solo Northern Championship 23/24 June 2012 Final Results

Results: 2012 Solo Northern Champs 2012 Solo Northern Traveller A breezy first day with average wind speeds in the region of 16-18 knots and 31 knot gusts coming through gave tiring sailing to the 26 boats which set out for the first race (leaving several on the shore). By the start of the third race of the day, the numbers were down to 16. Andy Tunnicliffe held the lead after the first days racing with three first places with Chris Brown in second position and Steve Denison in third. After a hard days sailing, the competitors retired to the clubhouse to a great evening meal, a quiz and a fully stocked bar. On the Sunday, the wind started at a much lower strength and had swung around towards the west to let the PRO set a beat straight up the length of the water. By the end of the sixth race, however, conditions were in the same region as Saturday’s winds and, again, only 16 boats finished. With two races back to back on Sunday morning, Andy Tunnicliffe from RWYC continued to show his consistency with a second (which he discarded) and a first to clinch the Northern Championships with four bullets to count and no need to sail the last race. David Mitchell took advantage of that fact and took pole position in the third race, adding to his second place in the second race allowing him to take the Sunday Northern Traveller event in the split out results. First Leigh and Lowton boat was Paul Heath in ninth place in his first outing in the class.
