Tipsy Week 3 – squally weather filled the spectator stand
Tipsy Results On the 22nd January 2012 the UK’s biggest winter series, Leigh & Lowton’s Tipsy Icicle continued with its run of 11 weeks. Fleets consist of Asymmetric, Handicap, Solos and Lasers. So far after 3 weeks of the series we have already had 95 boats on the water. The galley was open all day and the bar was serving cold beer from 3pm.
The breeze was spectacular with a strong westerly averaging 20 knots and tipping 35 knots. The squally weather filled the spectator stand and best placed the PRO and his team to take up station in the race office.
Races 5 & 6 in the Asymmetric fleet saw some spectacular downwind action with Dave Exley & Nigel Hall taking line honours in race 5 and Paul and Mike Allen taking the honours in race 6. Hamish Gledhill and Simon Dowse (West Riding) were as ever on the pace and very close behind.
The Laser fleet was again dominated in both races 5 & 6 by Ian Jones (Dovestones). Royston Taggart and Andy Stott (Redesmere) filled the second and third slots with Wendy Jones (Dovestones) close behind in the 4.7.
The Solo fleet was this week dominated in races 5 & 6 by Ian Hopwood. Steve White was just off the front scoring a second place.
In races 5 & 6 the handicap fleet was dominated by Mark Platt in his Supernova and Daniel Budden in his Topper. Zac Gibbon was consistent on the day scoring 2 seconds and Haydn Griffiths was never far away on handicap in his Topper.
This was week 3 for Leigh’s dedicated winter series PRO who is demonstrating consistency in his approach which is being greatly appreciated by all the fleets. The safety team was co-ordinated outside of the PRO’s team from a dedicated onshore station which co-ordinated safety cover for the whole of the Flash and the recovery of sailors and equipment. All in all it was another great day’s sailing at Leigh with members and guests having thoroughly enjoyed the conditions in what was a tough day in the office.
