Q&A with the boat’s designer:
Q: you don’t have to kneel in the middle of the boat downwind do you? We’re all suffering with knackered knees you see! Can you comment on technique for sailing it downwind FAST ?
A: the avoidance of kneeling was one of the ergonomic aims of the H2. You can sit astride the central buoyancy tank; in the lighter stuff you can stand up (the H2 is relatively stable). In really bad conditions you can sit on the aft tank. In survival conditions (such as Jim Hunt faced at the Birkett Trophy this month) you may have to kneel on the aft tank with your toes over the transom!
Q: Toes over transom sounds a bit hairy sand only for the brave superstars
A: There were reported gusts of up to 50 knots at the Birkett. Don’t know if that’s true, but Jim (who is a master of understatement) said it was a bit hairy. I was now going to say that you would not get those conditions on Pennington Flash, but I can recall the Merlin Rocket Silver Tiller event there in (I think) 1973 – it was the windiest race I have ever sailed in. (Modesty forbids me to tell who won the event!).
Q: Can you advise what the optimum weight range may be for this boat?
A: The H2 was designed for 75kg to 95kg, but as there has been virtually no H2 to H2 racing to date it is difficult to answer accurately. The H2 has a powerful hull (which might favour lightweights) but this is balanced by a powerful rig (which might favour heavyweights).
